GCSE Religious Education
Curriculum Statement of Intent
The curriculum is much more than just lessons. It includes the ethos, attitudes and relationships which create the family life of our school. Our aim is to provide a broad, balanced and rigorous curriculum that meets the needs and aspirations of every young person and leaves them well-prepared for their future. The Religious Education curriculum is planned to ensure that students gain a broad overview of all major world religions as well as the skills and knowledge to engage in debates about current affairs and poignant philosophical and ethical debates. All students should be able to critically analyse and evaluate evidence, discuss how beliefs influence actions and lifestyles and develop their own, informed opinion on issues. “Developing opinions grounded in knowledge.”
The curriculum intends to:
- Allow students to gain a broad overview of all major world religions, for example, Buddhism and Christianity.
- Allow students to develop skills and knowledge both of religion and personal beliefs.
- Allow students to engage in current affairs, through each of our units, such as our ‘Religion in Britain’ unit.
- Allow students to engage in philosophical and ethical debates, such as through our GCSE unit of ‘Religion and Life’.
- Allow students to critically analyse and evaluate evidence through exam-style questions and structured debates.
- Allow students to discuss how belief influences actions and lifestyles, throughout our units from years 7-11.
- Allow students to develop their own, informed opinions
